Pumpkin for babies

You can introduce pumpkin from the start of solids, around 6 months, once your baby is developmentally ready. Cooked pumpkin turns soft and works in lots of different ways. Pumpkin provides beta-carotene, which the body turns into vitamin A.

How to serve by age

6–8 months

Pumpkin cooked until very soft, served as a puree, mashed, or as large soft pieces for self-feeding.

9–11 months

Small soft pieces of cooked pumpkin or finely chopped flesh as part of family meals made without salt.

12–23 months

Soft cooked pumpkin in small bite-size pieces as part of everyday family meals.

Choking risk

Raw or undercooked pumpkin can be too firm for babies. Cook pumpkin until soft before serving. Always stay with your child while they eat.

Allergies

Pumpkin isn’t considered a common food allergen. Individual allergic reactions are still possible. Some people with pollen allergies may react to certain plant foods.
