Peanut butter for babies

  • From 6 months
  • Allergen

You can introduce peanut butter once your baby has started solids, usually around 6 months.

Many international health organizations recommend introducing peanut early, in a form that’s safe for your baby’s age.

For babies, choose smooth peanut butter with no nut pieces, added sugar, or salt.

Peanut butter

How to serve by age

6–8 months

  • smooth peanut butter thinned to a soft consistency;
  • can be stirred into cereal, puree, or yogurt.

9–11 months

  • a thin layer of smooth peanut butter spread on soft foods;
  • soft mixtures with other foods.

12–23 months

  • peanut butter in meals and snacks;
  • avoid thick, dense spoonfuls.

Choking risk

Thick peanut butter can be a choking hazard for babies and young children.

To lower the risk:

  • thin peanut butter with water, breast milk, formula, or puree;
  • don’t offer thick peanut butter straight from a spoon;
  • avoid whole peanuts and large nut pieces.

Always stay with your child while they eat.

Allergies

Peanut is a common food allergen.
