How to serve by age
6–8 months
Ripe banana, mashed until soft and smooth.
A large, soft spear of ripe banana that’s easy to hold.
9–11 months
Soft pieces of ripe banana.
Soft sticks or slices your baby can pick up.
12–23 months
Bite-size pieces or slices of ripe banana.
Pieces your child can pick up and eat on their own.
Choking risk
Banana is naturally soft, but when your baby is starting solids, serve it in a form that matches their age and skills. Always stay with your child while they eat, and avoid large firm chunks.
Allergies
Banana isn’t considered a major food allergen. However, people with a latex allergy may cross-react to banana. Individual reactions are possible.
